THERE IS NO BETTER TIME TO HAVE CATARACT SURGERY THAN NOW!

WHAT IS A CATARACT?
A cataract is the clouding of the normally clear natural lens inside the eye.  It is commonly compared to looking through frosted glass.

HOW ARE CATARACTS TREATED?
Surgery is the only way to treat Cataracts when your daily lifestyle and activities are affected.  Cataract Surgery is a simple, relatively painless procedure to restore vision impaired by Cataracts.  Cataract Surgery is the most frequently performed surgery in the United States and continuous advancements have made available more customized surgery options for patients.

CATARACT SURGERY OPTIONS:

1.  Basic Lens:     The basic lens has been the only available option to our patients in recent years.  This lens may correct your distance vision well enough to see road signs, players on a base ball field or the flowers in your garden from your kitchen window, thus eliminating the need for glasses.  You will still need the aid of glasses for near and intermediate vision even if you don’t need them now.

2.  Limbal Relaxing Incision (LRI):     Our Surgeon may recommend LRI to anyone with an astigmatism that is a good candidate.  LRI procedures have gained widespread acceptance among Cataract surgeons in recent years.  The benefits of LRI procedures include almost immediate recovery of vision.  This means it will reduce your need for glasses for distance vision after surgery.  You will still need to wear glasses for reading and intermediate vision even if you don’t need them now.

3.  Toric Lens:     This is another option our surgeon may recommend to anyone that is a good candidate.  A Toric lens will correct or reduce your corneal astigmatism at the same time it corrects cataracts.  The result is typically improved distance vision and less dependence on glasses.    You will still need the aid of glasses for near and intermediate vision even if you don’t need them now.

4.  Premium Lens:     This is another option our surgeon may recommend to anyone that is a good candidate.  A premium Lens will correct your distance vision just like the basic option but it also allows you to see at near and intermediate distances with much less dependency on glasses.  For example in addition to seeing things in the distance, you will also be able to see your computer, car dashboard, golf balls, your grandchild’s face when you are reading them a story, labels or read the paper.

If you have been told or think you may have a Cataract contact our office today.  You will be scheduled for an evaluation with Dr. Joy. If surgery is necessary our surgical coordinator will explain all pre-operative steps and get you on your way to better vision.

LASIK

UNABLE TO SEE CLEARLY WITHOUT GLASSES?

Refractive surgery offers you the freedom of enjoying sports, playing with your kids or just waking up to see what time it is without needing glasses.  Our refractive surgeon provides a variety of refractive procedures including LASIK, PRK and Epi-LASIK.

WHAT IS LASIK?
Laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is an outpatient procedure used to treat nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.  A specialized instrument, the microkeratome, is used to make a thin flap on the cornea.  The laser is applied to treat beneath the corneal flap; the flap is then replaced and allowed to heal without stitches.

WHAT IS PRK?
With Photorefractive Keratectom (PRK) the surgeon will remove tissue from the outré layer of the cornea, called the epithelial.  Then the cornea will be treated depending on whether you are nearsighted, farsighted or have astigmatism.  After treatment you will have a contact lens bandage to wear for three-five days until the doctor removes it.

WHICH METHOD IS BETTER?
There is no method better than another.  Discuss your needs with our refractive surgeon to determine the best procedure for you.

AM I A CANIDATE?
After a thorough examination and discussion with our surgeon the proper or most favorable refractive surgery will be selected.  If you are not a candidate for any of the laser procedures, there is sill hope in correcting your refractive error.  Various forms of refractive surgery use laser to reshape your cornea and how light rays are refracted on your retina.  In some cases instead of treating the cornea the natural lens inside your eye can be replaced or enhanced by implanting an artificial intra ocular lens (IOL).  These artificial IOL’s help correct your vision also.  This procedure is called refractive lens exchange or clear lens extraction and may be used to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness and presbyopia (the inability to focus up close).

If you are ready to break free from your glasses or contact lenses and are interested in learning more about all the possibilities, call and schedule an evaluation today at 315-788-0022!

Eyelid Surgery

Would you like to have a younger appearance?

At Jefferson Eye Surgeons we care about your complete eye care including the health of your eyelids. With age, the excess skin around your eyes can lose its elasticity and cause both your upper and lower eyelids to droop. This condition is called Ptosis.

Symptoms of Ptosis may include eye discomfort, reduced field of vision and a needlessly aged appearance. Luckily, our physicians at Jefferson Eye Surgeons can help you by restoring the normal position of your eyelids and improving these symptoms.

The restoration begins with a procedure known as blepharoplasty. During this procedure, the excess skin is surgically removed from around the eye. The procedure is safe with minimal scarring and it may even be covered by your insurance carrier.  The end result is  improved appearance, vision and comfort.

Call our office today at 315-788-0022 for a consultation, you deserve it!
